Hmm.. I went to watch this film as they papers gave good reviews about it, saying it’s the best Malaysian horror movie to date. So naturally I was quite excited about it being a horror movie fan, and the fact that the movie is based on the urban legends of Malaysia. I’m sure everyone had heard stories about that sort of things before.

Sadly, I must say it was quite poorly done. The idea, the concept, was good I admit. But the way they delivered it, in my opinion, was not that great.

Good points first, I must admit that one scene made me jump from my seat and “melatah”. But that was about it. The rest of the movie was, sorry to say, laughable at most part.

During the scene when the people got possessed by the ghost that has been passed down from past generations, I was shocked that they were speaking Bahasa Malaysia like we speak today. Not even in Baku. From the first-hand accounts that I’ve heard from others, those possessed will speak differently, like Bahasa Malaysia in the past. I don’t know, maybe instead of “kau” it should have been “kamu”.

The ghost was too static also. And with those hand movements, it looked comical.

But nevertheless, it did make my girlfriend scream and close her eyes through out the movie.
Putting the bad points aside, it is a good movie. However they are a lot of improvements that could have been done to make it even better.

Half way through the movie, I decided to walk out. Not because it is scary but because the movie is just so amateurish. The actor is trying his best to act…with his eyes darting around all the time. The dialogue are scripted for stage acting…and there is a lack of realism. To make things worst, when I see the ghost floating around and chasing after the car, I almost burst out laughing. The Thai “Shutter” will be 5/5 but for this movie, I would only give it a 1/5 rating. I wish I could ask for a refund.

  8. [...] ps : I couldnt dare to watch Jangan Pandang Belakang ( eventho I bought the dvd ).  I was this close to hit the cinema with my husband, but I had to cancel for I was terrified that I cant sleep at night.  But I went out with my girlfriends and watched Zombi Kampung Pisang.  Tell you what, IT’S HILLARIOUS ! I say, well done to the movie crue, they manage to make the movie at least 90% realistic. The crue really make their own study about “SAKA/SAKE”.

  13. Captain says:

I bought the VCD and after watching it..I know they were trying their best to be with the rest of the movies out there.

My advice is, they have to have a ‘surprise’ for Malaysians, or else it’ll be a waste of time and money. Shutters, Dark Water, Grudge are the new trend that even Hollywood is giving them the credits. U know whatamean?

For horror movies, try to read the Book of Shadows, even Hollywood, Japs or Thai don’t really have the recipe to scare people. Witchcraft is the ultimate knowledge of everything….but of course if you dare to enter…all the best to you moviemakers!
